NOTES:
Bird identifications by Steve Bachman and Joann Pfeiffer.  Bird photographs by Steve Bachman, taken at or in the vicinity of Gervais Mill Park, unless otherwise noted.

The order in which the species are listed above generally follows the taxonomic order established by the American Ornithological Union (AOU).  Names conform to AOU standards.

We've defined "regularly-occurring species" as those birds that, over the course of a year, are quite likely to be found in the park by casual observers. There are at least three different groups of these regularly-occurring species:

  • Year-round residents
Examples: Northern Cardinals, Black-capped Chickadees, and Downy Woodpeckers.
  • Breeding season regulars
These birds may nest at the park, as for example Mallards, House Wrens, and Tree Swallows; and/or they may routinely feed in it during the breeding season, as do Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets, and others.
  • Common Migrants
Some species that migrate though our area and will be commonly found at the park and ponds on their way north (during spring) or south (during fall). Examples of these include Dark-eyed Juncos, White-throated Sparrows, and American Redstarts.

Note also that many very common park species are not detailed on this page.  Mostly this is because we have not yet taken decent photographs in the park of these birds.  But this is a work-in-progress, and we will continue to add pages.  Commonly-found species not yet profiled include Song Sparrow, Eastern Bluebird, Dark-eyed Junco, Northern Flicker, Red-winged Blackbird, Barn Swallow, and more.
